This blog records what I hope will be a walk to from Canterbury to Rome along the Via Francigena, preceded by a walk along the E2 Long Distance Path from my home near Malham in the Yorkshire Dales to the official start of the Via Francigena in Canterbury. The total distance is about 2700 km. I start the walk on March 11, 2016, and my aim is to reach Rome sometime in July.
The Via Francigena was one of the main medieval pilgrimage routes to Rome. It started at Canterbury and ran through northern and northeastern France through Reims and Besancon to Lausanne in Switzerland. The route circled around Lake Geneva to the east and crossed the Grand St. Bernard Pass through the Alps. It then passed through Piedmont, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Umbria, Lazio, and to Rome.
You can see approximately where I am at the moment, and my route so far, on th
is map. The posts and map may be a few days behind at times, depending on when I have access to Wifi.
